Celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day with SOS!

  SOS is hosting a National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration on June 21 at Memorial Plaza and the public is invited to attend!   SOS has been marking this important day internally for several years and is excited to open this event up as a shared learning opportunity and celebration. Come experience Indigenous culture including men’s and women’s traditional, jingle, and fancy shawl style dancing.   The event will take place from 5 to 6 pm. SOS Legacy Concert

Click here to purchase Concert tickets and Legacy Globe This year marks SOS's 55-years of caring in the Parksville Qualicum Beach region, and we are hosting a special Legacy Concert on June 28. The concert will honour our past and put a spotlight on our future. We have partnered with Berwick Parksville Retirement Community to host the Legacy Concert in the Berwick Theatre featuring renowned Canadian actor, musician, activist, and Companion of the Order of Canada, Tom Jackson. Tom Jackson’s performance will take place thanks to our presenting sponsor - Raymond James Qualicum Beach Branch. Jackson has been honoured with several achievements including the 2007 Juno and Gemini Humanitarian Awards and the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement, to name a few. The evening will include songs and stories by Tom Jackson, a newly created short video, door prizes, give-aways, some special surprises, and a big announcement.  Tickets are $55 and will go on sale May 10. SOS has also partnered with Robert Held Art Glass to create a 55th Anniversary Legacy Globe. These one-of-a-kind, handmade, limited edition commemorative items will be on sale for $100.


SOS Thrift Shop Anniversary and Customer Appreciation

SOS Thrift Shop has been at its current location on Hirst Avenue for 20 years and it continues to be the main funder of all SOS programs and services. It is a community hub, created by community, supported by community, and benefiting our community’s residents. Shoppers and guests are encouraged to wear ‘60s themed clothing and accessories to celebrate the initial opening of SOS Thrift Shop in 1969, and 20 years at 188 Hirst Ave. W. in Parksville. There will be cake, complimentary hot dogs and popcorn, spin-the-wheel for prizes, special sales and live music outside from 2-3 pm. Free SOS Learning Series – Aging with Purpose & Grace

  Join us on Saturday October 21 from 9:00 a.m. to noon, at the SOS Community Services Centre in Parksville for a free seminar about how to prepare for your personal and financial needs as you navigate the aging journey. Learn from and ask questions of an esteemed group of experts on topics such as: Brain and Memory Health Physical, Emotional, and Social Wellbeing Aging in Place – home care and other available community resources Will Planning – what should your will contain Choosing your Power of Attorney and Executor Writing your Personal Directive (will also touch on MAID – Medical Assistance in Dying) Planning ahead for your End of Life arrangements Leaving a Legacy Complimentary refreshments will be available and a door prize will be drawn at the end of the seminar. The Silver Spur Toy Ride will take place Sunday, Nov. 26. Horses and riders from the Silver Spur Riding Club will dress up for this festive occasion and parade down the streets of Parksville. Riders will leave Ballenas Secondary School (time TBA) and travel along Morison Avenue, heading up McMillan St. to the SOS Thrift Shop for a short break, before carrying on to Stanford Place (to visit with residents there), and then back to Ballenas along Hirst Avenue. Because Giving Tuesday occurs at the same time of year when SOS is busy raising funds to purchase grocery gift cards and collecting toys for our Caring for Community at Christmas program, we thought this would be a great day to offer a challenge to our community. We are asking you to help us raise $50,000 next Tuesday to go towards our $300,000 Caring for Community at Christmas goal.

Red Apple Fill the Sleigh for SOS

Red Apple is once again hosting its Toy Drive and Fill the Sleigh Day! Red Apple collects toys and cash donations over three weeks for SOS, culminating with Fill the Sleigh Day on Saturday, Dec. 9. The cash donations are rounded up to the nearest dollar and used to purchase gifts needed in our Toy Shop. Red Apple donates 5% of the sales made on Fill the Sleigh Day (Dec. 9) to SOS.
